Types of Sedation for Kids in New Westminster can make dental visits less scary for children who feel anxious, have special needs, or need longer procedures. We describe options, what to expect at Dr. Phoebe W. Tsang (New Westminster), and how families can decide which approach fits their child.

Why Families Consider Sedation

Children react to dental care in different ways. Some sit calmly for a checkup; others resist, cry, or have gag reflexes that make treatment unsafe. Sedation helps your child stay relaxed and still so the dentist can work effectively while reducing stress for everyone. Our team talks through options, timing, and safety measures so parents feel confident. For details about our team and approach, visit our about page.

Types Of Sedation For Kids In New Westminster

We offer several levels of sedation depending on your child’s needs, age, and the procedure length. Nitrous oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, eases anxiety and wears off quickly. Oral sedation uses a mild medication taken by mouth to produce drowsiness but keeps your child responsive. For more involved cases, we coordinate care to provide deeper sedation with appropriate monitoring. Learn more about specific approaches on our sedation dentistry for kids page.

What Happens During A Sedation Visit

Before treatment, we review medical history and any medications. On the day, we check vital signs and explain steps to you and your child in age-appropriate terms. The team monitors breathing, oxygen levels, and heart rate throughout the procedure. After care includes recovery time and take-home instructions so your child returns to routine safely. If you’d like to read about the types of restorative work we do while kids are calm, see our restorative dentistry page.

Five Key Benefits

  • Reduces fear so your child can receive needed care without trauma
  • Allows multiple procedures in one visit, lowering repeat appointments
  • Improves safety by keeping the mouth still for precise dental work
  • Helps children with strong gag reflexes or special needs tolerate treatment
  • Minimizes memory of the procedure, easing future visits

How We Decide Which Option Fits

We weigh medical history, dental needs, age, and behaviour. For routine cleanings, nitrous oxide may suffice. For several fillings or crowns in one appointment, oral sedation might make the visit manageable for both child and parent. If a child has complex medical conditions, we consult with medical providers and follow strict monitoring protocols. Parents can ask questions during a pre-visit consultation, or contact our office directly to schedule one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes sedation safe for my child?

Our team follows standard monitoring practices and pre-visit screening. We explain fasting rules and other steps to reduce risk.

Will my child need someone to drive them home?

Yes. For oral or deeper sedation, a responsible adult must accompany and drive your child home. We provide detailed aftercare instructions.

How long will the effects last?

Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes. Oral sedation can cause drowsiness for several hours. Expect a recovery period and avoid school or strenuous activity that day.

Which procedures commonly use sedation?

Sedation helps for fillings, crowns, extractions, tooth repairs after injury, and long appointments where holding still is necessary.

What should I bring to the appointment?

Bring your child’s health history, any medications, and a favourite comfort item. If you need directions to the clinic, find us on the map.

  • If your child has recent cold symptoms, call ahead.
  • Ask about pre-visit instructions for eating and drinking.
  • Keep a list of questions ready for the consultation.

My daughter had a wonderful experience with Dr. Phoebe and her dedicated team. She is meticulous, careful, and wholeheartedly committed. She explained all the necessary treatments for my daughter and provided the most helpful advice tailored to her age and specific condition, ensuring my daughter felt no pressure during her dental care. In addition, Dr. Phoebe is incredibly friendly and genuinely loves children. She transformed the fear that many kids—and even some adults—often feel about dental visits into a positive experience. This is a clinic truly worth sharing with others so they can also visit and experience such excellent care.

Highly recommend Dr Tsang and her team. Dental procedures can be very scary, especially for your little one, and biggest fear is if the dental team is over charging or over prescribing. I can honestly say you can trust Dr Tsang and her team. I was impressed by the patience and gentle approach she used when explaining all our options, answering my list: if questions. She did not automatically overprescribe yet she understands what’s needed to ensure my 5 year old daughter left with the best experience. My daughter used oral sedation with Midazolam (Short acting Benzo that is easily reversible and safe) which is much less invasive than general anesthetic route often recommended by other pediatric dentists first As well Dr Tsang was honest when updated X-rays were taken that there were fewer than needed cavities to be filled than we had expected Not to mention they had so many goodies and prizes for my daughter throughout the various steps of process, that she left as if she just went to a birthday party. To summarize, if you’re looking for a very knowledgeable but humble professional, whom you can trust to not over prescribe yet is willing to ensure your child has the most comfortable and positive dentistry experience, Dr Tsang and her team embodies all those traits above.

Our 2.5-year-old son, Howard, recently started experiencing pain in his upper right back teeth. Concerned, we took him to a nearby general dentist, who, after a thorough examination, referred us to a pediatric dental specialist, Dr. Phoebe Tsang. To our surprise, Howard had extensive dental issues, requiring treatment for 14 teeth through surgery. As parents, we felt deeply sorry that he had been enduring more discomfort than we had realized, especially since he was too young to fully express his pain. Howard had been drinking milk at night since birth, and we were unaware of the significant impact it could have on his teeth. However, after our initial visit to the general dentist, he successfully transitioned away from night bottles. Determined to provide him with the best care, we made the one-hour drive from White Rock to see Dr. Tsang. From the moment we arrived, Dr. Tsang and her team were incredibly professional, compassionate, and gentle with Howard. Dr. Tsang herself is not only highly knowledgeable but also exceptionally skilled in pediatric dentistry. We feel truly fortunate to have had her perform Howard’s surgery. Yesterday, on March 18, 2025, Dr. Tsang and anesthesiologist Dr. Robert carried out Howard’s procedure with exceptional expertise and care. We are incredibly grateful for their dedication. Post-surgery, Howard has been recovering well—he is experiencing minimal discomfort and has been able to drink formula and eat soft foods comfortably. This was Howard’s first surgery, and under Dr. Tsang’s guidance, we are confident that he will continue to improve and eat with ease. We sincerely appreciate the outstanding care provided by Dr. Tsang and her team and wholeheartedly recommend her to any parents seeking a skilled pediatric dentist for their child’s dental needs. Best wishes from Eileen and families :)

Highly recommended Dr Phoebe Tsang! Our 5 year old son was very anxious at our local dentist and we did not want him going under anesthetic for his teeth. Thankfully we got a referral to Pediatric Dental Specialist Dr Tsang, who uses conscious sedation. From the first FaceTime consultation, she was so kind! Our son was at ease and really looked forward to meeting her. She thoroughly explained the procedure and answered all our questions with patience. She is unbelievably knowledgeable and gave us reassurance that everything would go well. Upon arrival at her beautiful office, we were greeted with the utmost love from not only her but her whole team. Being in her care was top of the line, we cannot thank her enough for making this go so smooth for our family. If your children need dental work done, look no further. I guarantee you, she is the absolute best you will find!

My 4 year old son has many sensory issues and brushing his teeth was absolutely impossible, which is what brought us to Dr Tsang. He needed a ton of work done for his mouth to be healthy again. I was blown away by her and her staff from start to finish. She treated my son so well and I was so impressed with her efforts to connect with him in a way that would work for him. He did need dental surgery, which scared me but all the questions I had were answered so quickly and there was a great deal of communication from his first appointment, all the way up to the surgery. You can tell how much Dr Tsang and her staff care about their patients. I couldn't be happier with my son's care. I truly recommend Dr Tsang and staff if your child needs dental work done. They have so much compassion and throughout the entire process I felt like my son was in great hands. I'm so thankful to everyone who worked with him and those I had contact with over many months. This was a very stressful situation for me and it was made so much better by everyone there.
